Dr. Kisenge (JKCI) performs ICD implantation

Huge shout out to our Madaktari volunteer Dr. Matt Sackett from CENTRA for teaching ICD implantation in Tanzania. Dr. Peter Kisenge was able to do this with only minimal assistance. When Matt leaves, they will be able to do this on their own. #TrainForward #JKCI #MADAKTARI

US CHARGÉ, Dr. Patterson and head of CDC TZ, Dr. Cain, visit JKCI

US Chargé Dr. Patterson, and head of CDC Dr. Kevin Cain, paid a visit to JKCI on Tuesday 14th August. Our seasoned volunteer from CENTRA, Dr. Matthew Sackett, was there to join the JKCI team (Dr. Shem on the picture below) to welcome Dr. Patterson. We feel honoured by their interest in JKCI and Madaktari Africa.

ACC '17 - Look back

This was our first time ever to have participated in the annual conference of the American College of Cardiology. It was a busy three-day event with over 15,000 participants.

The objective of our participation was 1) to establish visibility, 2) to attract new volunteers, and 3) to obtain donations or link up with potential collaborators.

We were present with a team of four: Dr. Eric Powers (MUSC), Dr. Mazen Albaghdadi (Massachusetts General Hospital), Dr. Raj Patel (Ochsner Health System), and our Managing Director: Maarten Hoek.

It was a busy time and we are pleased to announce that we have recruited over 60 new volunteers and 3 main collaborators.

We feel confident that with this extra help we can bring cardiology services to new underserved populations within Tanzania and possibly Ethiopia.

On Monday 5 September an event for paediatric cardiac screening was held at Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute. It was a busy day with 135 children attending for the free screening.

Fifteen of the children were found to be so ill they are already scheduled for an operation. In addition, 20 more children were placed on monitoring and medication. A further 15 children were on cardiac related medication which was found to be unnecessary. Of the remaining children 60 had respiratory issues, malnutrition and/or dental issues.

Of the fifteen children scheduled for an immediate intervention, the most common diagnosis was a septum between the left and right ventricle, and Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). In PDA, abnormal blood flow occurs between two of the major arteries connected to the heart.

After intervention, all children are expected to leave a normal life. Without intervention, most of these kids are unlikely to make it their fifth birthday.

Each intervention costs around $4000. Please help us by donating.
