Who We Are

Listen to this two minute talk by Professor Peter Zwerner. How much would you give to save a complete strangers life?

Madaktari Africa is a US registered 501(C)3 not-for-profit, non-governmental organisation. We dedicate our time and energy toward the education and training of health care workers in sub-saharan Africa.

Our Mission

Our mission is to advance medical expertise and care in sub-Saharan Africa, through the training and education of local medical personnel, using the Train-Forward model. Through this model we will improve health care and improve medical autonomy. We achieve this by investing knowledge, skills, and time, rather then just dollars, into the Tanzanian healthcare infrastructure.

Our Vision

We see a global community of medical specialists working side-by-side providing state-of-the-art life saving or life altering medical care to all communities in Tanzania by 2025. We also foresee this global community to expand beyond the border of Tanzania and provide medical excellence to all communities in sub-Saharan Africa.

Our Philosophy - Train Forward

Traditional medical aid consists mainly of foreign medical personnel to volunteer their time and perform medical care in countries in need. This model works particularly well during surge capacity needs, which occur as a result of natural or manmade disaster, or disease outbreaks. For example, during the recent Ebola outbreak in Western Africa, hundreds of foreign medical personnel were flown in for a short-term deployment in an Ebola treatment unit or other care centre, and then left again. Now that the Ebola outbreak has ceased, the affected countries like Liberia and Sierra Leone are left again with less then 10 doctors per million population.

What sets Madaktari Africa apart from other NGO’s is our focus on specialised and advanced medical training using of the Train-Forward method. The Train-Forward model was first trialled by us through the teaching of neurosurgery in Haydom, Tanzania. Additional programs in Cardiology and Nephrology have since been rolled out successfully in other parts of the country. Including, Dar es Salaam, Mwanza, and Mbeya.

To Train-Forward implies the use of highly skilled and specialised volunteers to work alongside local doctors and provide structured teaching in specific medical interventions. Local medical personnel then continue to become trainers themselves and pass on the newly taught skills to others, ensuring sustainable capacity building. Thus, the Train-Forward model spreads skills and expertise to an ever expanding pool of medical experts, thereby forming an ever increasing pool of highly qualified doctors.
